Tom Ogren

Tom Ogren has been on the FoHVOS board since 2007 and has served as vice president since November, 2008. As chairman of the Land Preservation Committee, Tom is responsible for land acquisition and securing grants from the State Green Acres Program and Mercer County. He is also responsible for securing easements for trails and monitoring Hopewell Township policies which relate to the preservation of open space.

Tom is a regular volunteer building and maintaining FoHVOS preserve trails and building new trails in the Hopewell Valley and the Sourlands for the New Jersey Trails Association. He has served as an advisor to Eagle Scout candidates on numerous trail improvement projects.

Tom was instrumental in securing new office space for FoHVOS staff at Baldpate Mountain and producing two FoHVOS publications: the “Guide to Walking Trails in the Hopewell Valley” and the booklet “The Kusers at Baldpate Mountain and the Creation of the Ted Stiles Preserve.”

Tom retired in 2007 from a career in local government administration. For 14 years he served as the Assistant to the Manager of East Windsor Township where he was responsible for open space acquisition, utilizing grants from Green Acres and Mercer County supplemented by a developer-supported Open Space Trust Fund.   He also created and chaired the non-profit East Windsor Green Space, Inc., which obtained additional grants to supplement Township funds for open space acquisitions.   He was also responsible for the funding and construction of new trails and bike paths. Previously, Tom served for 12 years as Director of Trenton’s Department of Housing and Development and was responsible for the creation and improvement of City parks.

Following retirement, Tom was elected to the Pennington Borough Council in 2007 and was re-elected in 2010. He served on the Borough Planning Board and chaired the Borough’s Open Space Committee and Shade Tree Commission.   He also served as Pennington’s representative to the Hopewell Valley Open Space Advisory Board.

Tom received an M.A. in Public Administration from Northern Illinois University. He currently resides in Lambertville with his wife Karen.
