The American Kestrel, a small and colorful falcon of grassland habitats, is a threatened species in New Jersey. FoHVOS invites families to participate in our kestrel conservation program by attending a nest box building workshop. This program will provide families with a hands-on volunteer opportunity that will directly benefit a state-threatened species.

FoHVOS is co-sponsoring a field trip with Washington Crossing Audubon Society on Saturday, April 20, at 7:00 AM, led by Sharyn Magee and Beth Craighead. Mount Rose Preserve consists of 387 acres of meadows, shrub land, and forest. On this walk we will be looking for a variety of early spring migrants. With the diversity of habitat, this is a naturalist’s treat.

The Ted Stiles Preserve at Baldpate Mountain boasts an abundance of spring-flowering plants, including mayapple, wild geranium, blackhaw viburnum, and many violets. This hike will train our eyes on plants big and small while noticing differences in flower and leaf characteristics.
